Stan Laurel family archive to be sold in Newcastle

Postby a&g on 31 Jul 2010, 08:30

A unique archive formed by Stan's sister Beatrice is to offered in Newcastle upon Tyne (UK) by direction of Stan Laurel's Great Niece. Sold by auctioneers Anderson & Garland (and from the same family source as the Huntley Jefferson Woods material we sold in 2004), the collection consists of 40 items and includes several rarities, such as AJ's first theatrical contract, a presentation dish putting the family in North Shields in 1896, seven images of Stan, (aged 7) Olga and Gordon Jefferson performing a play written by Stan as well as many unique, private images, many signed and dedicated to his sister. The collection is online now and will be sold as part of our sale held on the 7th, 8th and 9th September. This is the last opportunity fans will have to acquire this rare material as it is the last family collection remaining in the UK.

Any questions, either via this forum or via our website

Some really rare and amazing items! I have my eye on a few and will certainly try and acquire a number of them for the Archive to share with everyone.

Well, I was saving up for yet another Gibson guitar but maybe I can wait a wee while. It'll probably all go for a lot more than my piggy bank can offer anyway.

Wonderful items. The photos of young Stan and those of Stan in the 1960's (page 2) are great.

glad everyone likes them - its been very interesting cataloging and researching the images I think my favorite is the three taken at the bull

Babe is obviously smilling at Stan's antics - a really genuine (and rarely seen) private moment

Yes, these are wonderful photos!

I`d really like to bid on several items. But many of the photos are in a small size and it`s not easy to estimate the quality (sharpness & condition) of the photos. Does anybody know, if a catalogue with the items exist?

The "Young Stan" pic is on page 81 of the Pawson/Mouland book, presumably the original. Interesting to note that the working title for the book "Laurel Before Hardy" was "Young Stan" and hasn't been changed in the introduction.
tell me that again

The color photo of Stan and Babe from around 1956 is amazing!

I've looked at this lot again and the paper stock looks to be dated 1958 (week of oct 18 - 58 RO), also the background looks like The Oceana, meaning that this just cant be Babe but an IMPERSONATOR. Also the fact Stan has inscribed it "With a freind from Chicago" lends weight to this theory as Babe was from Harlem, Georgia.

So who is the mystery man??????

I tried to upload a bigger image but the sites at its limit apparently - i will try later

Stop Press! Our vendor has found ten more images which will be in the sale - likely to be on the website tomorrow lunchtime. Breifly a great Carte de Visite type photograph of AJ in white tie, a simmilar one of young Olga, three of pictures of Olga in costume, one of Olga and Bill at the Bull (circa late 1950s) and four of Ida Laurel - these really are the last of the collection!
